The Influence of Anxiety

The Desolation of Karn | Andor S1E3 | Dudes Daily

After finishing the first three episodes of Andor released simultaneously, I'm reminded (uncharitably) of the Hobbit films. The comparison isn't very deep, but in both cases I feel that too little content has been stretched to fill three installments in a not-particularly-satisfying way. The limp Marvel-style action sequences that fill this final entry in the trilogy, too, are reminiscent of the third Hobbit movie in an unflattering way.

Despite that, I do think this episode contains some interesting payoffs for this opening trilogy. Cassian meeting Maarva is the first plot point within the flashback timeline that has felt worthwhile, and both of their ideological speeches in the present day hit fairly well. Luthen carries my interest well enough for now, which is good given his seeming importance to the rest of the show.

The Bix/Tim subplot drags on even here, and I rolled my eyes at his quick death defending her from the cops he called in. Far too neat, and the whole subplot feels like a broad sketch of tropes no one bothered to go back and flesh out.

Not enough droid content for more #droidfeelings yet, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled.
